    SciFiFur Will Remain Open

    Hello everyone.

To say that writing these words is hard for me would be an understatement. The fact is though, that SciFiFur.net has not been very active over the past few months, and our attempts at reaching out to new members on other social media haven't brought us any new regular members. So, it's with a very heavy heart that I have to announce that at the end of August, SciFiFur.net will be closing its doors.

I want to thank each and every one of you all who have stuck with us through the years. We've had some good times, and some bad, but for the most part we've managed to stay a civil community.

If anyone wants to stay in touch, please PM us and we'll exchange contact info.

    Thanks, everyone.

Daryn is making the announcement, but I want everyone to understand that it wasn't he who made the decision, but it was me.

My reasons are fairly straightforward. The site just doesn't have much traffic anymore. I pay a monthly amount to keep the server going, and the software it is running on, I paid upwards to $200 for. Then in addition to that, we, Daryn and I have, have put countless hours of work into the site.

We can re-purpose the software to something else. Daryn and I discussed the possibility of starting a new site with it. We're not entirely sure what at this point. But that something else can be done with it, there is no argument.

Scififur.net sits mostly idle. We have 3 or 4 core members, but that's it. On a software suite and on a server that can support thousands. It just doesn't make sense to continue using the software and server for it. We hope we might be able to come up with an idea that might start making us some money. What we have certainly has the power to, but we have to use it wisely in order for it to. Right now, all it is doing is proving a drain on resources, and to to no real purpose, only to providing a place to go for a very few.

We've been open ten years. We've only ever had an on-and-off community. New members drift in, but then drift right back out again, many of them to never be seen again. All that work, all of the expense... and you know, we've not once, not ever, received any kind of a donation from anyone. We've done all of this work, spent all of this time and money, but only ever see people drift off. For, I can only assume, because the site doesn't feature anything really all that interesting to too many people. At the risk of sounding bitter about it: our site doesn't feature porn.

The Internet, as a whole, has long been a point of contention for me. That might sound a bit absurd, I admit, given as I operate a web service, but it nonetheless always has. The point of contention I have, is that people find it far too easy to be fickle on the Internet. Most do not see the work that goes into a place, the money it costs to maintain; they only see whether it interests them or not. And if it doesn't, it is all too easy to just go off and find something else, likely not even sparing a shrug for it as they do. I find that difficult to accept. Maybe it's the artisan in me. I find value in design first, immediately recognizing how much work people have put into something, and able to appreciate that before anything else. I hate how easy it is for most people to just place value on a place based only on whether it is interesting enough to hold their attention. It rankles me at just about every level.

For a long time I believed that presenting people with a superior website with superior technology and an environment that promotes real sense of community was the answer. After my ten years of experience with this site, I have been taught a very different understanding of what makes websites popular. And to not put too great a point on it, people don't care what a website looks like, they only care about content which interests them. I think the next site Daryn and I do will be to cater to which holds interest the most. I'll leave to your imagination what that might be.

To those who have been with us through the years, you have our thanks. And my thanks, especially. People like you, Arratra. People like you, Slice. You are appreciated more than you know, and you will be sorely missed.

But it is time we moved on. Scififur.net was a lot of fun to work on over the years, but we now move onto other things. Like Daryn said, though, if you want to keep in touch, just drop any of us a PM and we can share emails. As Daryn said, the site will be closing the last day of August.

With warmest regards, and no few fond memories,

I was wondering if this may happen at some point. I can't say I begrudge you the decision Rick - everything you say makes sense. Still, I'll be sad to see the place go. I've been a member here for almost half of my life, if you can believe it!

We could sit here all day and analyse exactly why SciFiFur never got beyond a dozen or so active members, but I'd rather say that I just appreciate all of the effort the two of you put into it, all of the care and hard work. It has meant a lot to me, and has really helped me to improve my writing, my communication skills and even my time management (from all of those short-lived projects like XAP! I'm still not goodat time management, but I'm better). It's been like a home online for me, and I won't ever forget that.

So, for what it's worth, I genuinely and sincerely want to say: thank you.

I understand and accept your decision, regardless of how I feel about it, and I wish you both the absolute best of luck in the future. And I'm needing to head to work now, otherwise this message would be a lot longer, but be assured that you'll be getting PMs once I'm back for those contact details!

      Kindest always,

      Slice/Joel.

        Oh... bummer...

I'm gonna miss this place... but, I understand.

SciFiFur's never been extremely active - I think the site was at its height back when I first joined, and there was less than 20 of us even then - and, well, $200 a month is extremely expensive for something that only four people are using.

If you guys want to find me on DA or Spacebattles, I go by the same username on there.

        And guys? Thanks for everything.

        It's been a blast.

Question: will forum content be archived as a static file of some kind?

I'd do it myself, but I really don't have the know-how to do so. :-\

No, there is no function to do that. So the content will be going away as well. If there is something here you want to keep, you should copy and paste it to text files.

A spambot in the thread announcing the closing of the site...

Anyway, I'll be hanging around until the site shuts down, in case someone wants to PM me. Also to do a few things for posterity's sake.

Well just because the site is closing doesn't mean I'm going to be lax on that sort of thing. Spambot deleted.

On another note, if you want to save posts, I found that browsers can still save out whole pages. In Chrome, you can click on the settings menu at the upper right, then choose More Tools. In there you'll have Save As. Use that to save you pages you want. Just remember you'll have to save out each page of posts in a thread individually. So be sure you name the html file something like Page x or something, otherwise you'll keep overwriting the last one you saved.

I've discovered that you can save a site via wget, which I have on my computer. But I don't know if that would do bandwidth thingies to the forums or anything. I can't look it up today though, way too tired. x_x

Good find. I've been using the save as trick, but this HTTrack might be easier.

I'll miss everyone. I know I was never really all that active here; I've never been the sort who can really hold much of a conversation, let alone come up with topics, so I tend to be fairly inactive on the few forums I've been on.

In terms of the overall activity, I feel like it's more a matter of the times more than anything; I don't think you guys did anything wrong and I don't think there were any issues with the content on the site. You guys could always make a SciFiFur Discord server; they're free and can be organized pretty well. I know it's not the same, but I feel like communities in general have been moving toward Discord and Telegram (but personally, I prefer Discord for communities, as you can make multiple categories and channels and keep it all organized; Telegram only has the one channel).

There's also a handful of free website/forum hosting sites out there; I haven't looked into them too much myself however, so I can't say how worthwhile they are (but I'm looking into them a bit now to see what the catch is).

Either way, thanks for running the forums, and I'll miss you guys.

As you can see, I used a different username there (one that emerged from the random-name-Generator on Shalkith Online years back when it was still running). That was because, at the time, I didn't want anyone from DA following me (for some reason I don't remember now).

And I think I might need to (finally) get Discord.

After giving this a lot of thought, I...

Well, I just can't do it. Yes, Daryn and I put a lot of work into it. Yes, it costs money to keep running. But at the end of the day, I just can't escape the fact that I love this site. And I love the people I've come to know as friends on it. The thought of losing contact with these people is a heartbreaking one for me. I just can't do it. Scififur.net is going to stay open. For better or for worse, I am keeping it open.

I do have some plans for the site, however. While I can't close it for sentimental reasons, I would also like to see it come to flourish too. To that end, there are going to be some changes. For starters, Arratra, I would like to invite you to become a member of staff. You've been with us since almost the beginning, and you're a brilliant and awesomely friendly person. Drop me a PM and we can go over some of the particulars of what I'd like for you to start doing for us.

Also, Daryn is going to be starting a regular expose' on science-fiction games. Me, I am going to start treating my role as Director as more of a CEO position - delegating authority to those who bring talent to the table, while I remain back organizing it all and doing my best to keep everyone focused and motivated. I will also be doing my best to keep a roleplay running on the site. In regard to this latter, I am running one now: The Virus. I intend to keep that one going. And speaking of which, it is your turn to post in it, Slice. Please do so as soon as you're able.

And speaking of you, Slice, your primary role is going to be to protect me from myself - stop me from being an ass when I become annoyed about something.

Yes, I am a gruff person. I am a doer. I hold people to expectations equal to those for which I hold myself. I expect results. That sometimes doesn't translate well into being a community leader on the Internet. You'll be that translator, Slice. I think together, us working together, we can really turn this site into something.

This community can become something. For it to do that, though, it's going to need vision, organization and leadership. Let's bring those. Let's become committed. We have potential here. Let's see what that potential can be. In order for it become anything though, it's going to need to remain open. So yes, we are keeping Scififur.net open. And we're going to keep it open. We'll be trying new things, and trying more if something doesn't work, but we're going to keep trying. And the site is going to remain open while we're doing that trying.

Hah, yet more unexpected news! But certainly welcome news.

I have to say, I'm relieved. This place has been part of my life for... well... almost half of it! I've made so many friends here (not least you and Daryn), and hopefully now I'll make more in the future!

In terms of my specific role in the continuation of the site, I happily accept! XD

My specific tendencies and skills don't necessarily lend themselves to organisation and leadership, but if I put modesty aside for a second, I think I am pretty damn good at seeing each side of a conflict and talking those sides down from saying things they may not mean and might regret. If this post is your permission, then I will take it gladly :p

But in all seriousness, it's wonderful to read this. I hope, in the end, that it was an easy decision to make.
