    Nightflyers sneak peek

Okay. That looks freaky, and totally worth watching.

That looks like it will be worth checking out, for sure. Something Very Bad has happened aboard that ship.

The person that encoded that trailer needs to be fired though, the black levels are all crushed.

Alright, then! Could be maybe the best space-horror since the first Alien movie? Sure looks like! If this preview was any indication! And if so, I wanna watch! Very much so! I loves me some good space-horror!

Well the story this is based off of was written by a certain George R.R. Martin, so it could very well be!

You mean George, right? Now that explains a lot.

I've gotten about four episodes in. It's a solid series so far IMO, but due to our DVR getting rather full I won't be able to watch the rest of it for the time being.

I'm going to wait for the season to be over and then get them all at once. It's looking good and I think mymom and Rick Canaan will enjoy them. These two people aren't related, mind you. My mom's into scary stuff, and Rick loves good scifi.

If your mom likes scary stuff then she'll LOVE this series. One of the people working on it (I forgot who) described it as a "haunted house story on a spaceship".

I started watching this last night. The first impression I got of it was that they were trying too hard to be scary. And that character development and motivation weren't thought through very well. Also that somebody thought 'R. R. Martin' and decided to throw a lot of money at it, hoping to cash in on the author's name because of its success with Game of Thrones.

The story isn't very interesting. If anything, it seems contrived. Something of a 'Captain Nemo had an evil mother story' and... what were they supposed to be doing again? Trying to meet up with an alien race to make first contact, and they brought their evil telepath along because... what again? And let's not forget the evil laser-spider. Ooh, it cuts people in half so it's got to be in the story!

The thing just doesn't make any sense. It's dull and the actors aren't very good, either. One of those things you yawn at and wonder if there's anything else on.

So this doesn't sound like a fair replacement for The Expanse for SyFy, then. It kind of seems like they're pushing this one because they own it.

Yeah, I'd say it is something the money people at SyFy are face-palming over.

From what I'm seeing, opinions are mixed. Some folks like it, some don't care for it much. The rating on IMDB is a 6.5. Not the worst thing on TV, but The Expanse is way better.

FWIW my rating might have been high because I'm not much of a horror film/series person myself. Outside of the first two Alien films and Prometheus, all of the science-fiction horror I've experienced was in the form of novels. So it might be a case of me not knowing any better.

I wouldn't sweat it one way or the other, Rusakov. Some people are just going to like a thing, while some are just not.

In the case of Nightflyers, where I'm concerned, it's a 'Not'. But it does have a few redeeming qualities. I can also see where it might appeal to the younger horror enthusiasts. It just didn't vibe with me, otherwise and I finally just had to give up trying to watch it.

Oh, looks interesting! Obviously with Rick's recommendation I'd go in with lower expectations, but it looks like it could be fun. Reminds me a little of the sci-fi horror film Pandorum.

If Nightflyers isn't your thing then Blindsight has a few similarities to it, but it's much bleaker (as in "you'll be asking yourself existential questions after its all over" kind of bleak) and based on plausible science.

I'm actually pretty wary of suggesting that novel too lightly because it can be a lot for people unaccustomed to such works. But I think you might be able to handle it.

Hah, thanks for the warning. I'm not going to pretend I'm immune to such bleakness, but so far I've only found two works that were simply too bleak for me to fully enjoy (one I enjoyed but couldn't finish - Threads, and one that was too bleak and unusual for me to find particularly funny, Jam). As such, I feel I can likely proceed :p

Very well. And if you end up liking it there's a sequel called Echopraxia that takes place after Blindsight.
