    First step towards cell-sized robots!

    Nanowerk

An electricity-conducting, environment-sensing, shape-changing machine the size of a human cell? Is that even possible?

Cornell physicists Paul McEuen and Itai Cohen not only say yes, but they’ve actually built the “muscle” for one.

With postdoctoral researcher Marc Miskin at the helm, the team has made a robot exoskeleton that can rapidly change its shape upon sensing chemical or thermal changes in its environment. And, they claim, these microscale machines – equipped with electronic, photonic and chemical payloads – could become a powerful platform for robotics at the size scale of biological microorganisms.
    All of my YES!!!

Oh wow, with something like this becoming a reality, just imagine the kind of cool things that could be done! Seems like we've not plateaued technologically quite yet.

Indeed. You may yet be able to get your wings IRL!

This article might make for less disjointed reading: Super-strong cell-size origami robots are coming | Cosmos

Such origami-style nanobots are not unique, but the scientists claim the Cornell versions have a clear advantage.

“Our devices are compatible with semiconductor manufacturing,” says team member Itai Cohen. “That's what’s making this compatible with our future vision for robotics at this scale.”

The biomorphs are described as being three times larger than a red blood cell, but three times smaller than a large neuron.
So not quite Revelation Space/Orion's Arm/Charles Stross-level tech yet... but this is a step in the right direction!
